Words are counted by splitting on whitespace and filtering empty tokens. Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word. Numbers and punctuation-only tokens are excluded.
"Characters" counts every character including spaces and newlines. "Chars (no spaces)" strips all whitespace first — useful for platforms with character limits that don't count spaces.
Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute — a commonly cited research figure for adult readers. Speaking time uses 150 wpm, typical for presentations.
Stop words are common words like "the", "a", "is", "and" that carry little meaning on their own. Enabling the stop word filter hides them from the keyword density list so you see only meaningful terms.
No. All counting and analysis happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded or stored anywhere — your text never leaves your device.

Our Word Counter tool gives you an instant, detailed breakdown of any text as you type. Whether you're writing a blog post, drafting an email, preparing a speech, or checking an essay against a word limit, you get all the numbers you need — no button clicks, no page reloads.
The tool tracks six core metrics simultaneously: total words, total characters (including spaces), characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and individual lines. Every metric updates live on every keystroke so you always have an accurate snapshot of your text.
Reading time is calculated at 238 words per minute — the widely cited average for silent adult reading. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, which matches a comfortable, clear presentation pace. These estimates are particularly useful for bloggers, content marketers, and anyone preparing a speech or podcast script.
The top keywords panel ranks the most frequent words in your text by occurrence count and percentage. With the stop word filter enabled, common filler words are hidden so you can see which meaningful terms dominate your content — valuable for SEO writing and content editing.
Set a target word count and a progress bar tracks how close you are in real time. This is especially useful for NaNoWriMo participants, students writing to a minimum length, or copywriters working to a brief. The bar turns green once you reach your goal.
